Summary of the Project

In March 2006 the University of Zagreb’s International Research Centre for Late Antiquity and Middle Ages (IRCLAMA) applied to the competition organized by the European Commission as a part of Sixth Framework Programme and Invitation, INCO Specific Support Actions for Western Balkans. The application to the European Commission funds was a logical next step in consistent implementation of the Centre’s programme policy especially as in the past fifteen years the Centre, under the guidance of Professor Miljenko Jurkoviæ, has developed into a leading European centre for the study of European cultural heritage in the period of Late Antiquity and Middle Ages. Furthermore, the application was grounded on IRCLAMA’s clearly defined development strategies.

Impact
Impact on local standards and policy development

Through implementation of this project, the International Research Centre for Late Antiquity and Middle Ages (IRCLAMA) shifts its activities from a narrow scientific focus towards an inclusive cultural policy, with the aim to ensure access to knowledge and skills to local cultural institutions, thus assisting in overcoming the limitations of regional cultural centres which until now have been excluded from general scientific tendencies and supporting the development of strong and well-informed centres of cultural life of the local community. In cooperation with local institutions, IRCLAMA intends to strengthen the mechanisms of knowledge dissemination and flow of relevant information. In addition, the Centre’s goal is the decentralization of acquired knowledge through utilization of new technologies, digital data bases, informational networks and specialist education of local partners.
At the same time, through diverse activities of its micro-regional branches, IRCLAMA supports regional and local government in creating an inclusive cultural strategy, which closely follows their programmes of cultural, as well as economic, social and educational development. This is the role of production of technical documentation and feasibility studies for archaeological parks, conducted in cooperation with eminent European experts and partners from local cultural institutions—creating an all-encompassing policy of local cultural development, stemming from the idea that overall societal development is closely connected with cultural development, as it encourages the flow of knowledge, experience and cultural interaction between local and regional cultural institutions with international partners.
